- We were looking for materials on how to teach Computer Programming to children aged between 10 and 14 years
- We wanted to show our own children that it’s possible to do something more creative with computers than just watching YouTube videos or posting comments on Facebook
- We wanted to show the community that it’s possible to teach Java to children
- We wanted to show that all this can be done in a really fun way for the children
- All this in languages other than English
Because all this (and plenty of other reasons), some members of the DEVOXX team started in 2012
